The Japanese Cryptomeria is not as popular as Leyland Cyprus but probably should be for many reasons. Its needles are not as soft as the Leyand, but accomplishes the same purpose as the Leyland (e.g. a fast growing barrier plant) with greater disease tolerance and some variety in the winter with bronzing or even purple coloring. They are excellent as a privacy hedge or even as a specimen plant.
